UNITED MUTATION "DARK SELF IMAGE" LP (MTAWP #3) OFFICIAL RELEASE UPDATE

A great big fat hello to all you hardcores out there in the digital multiverse. This is my first post on this site in quite awhile. Anyway, I apologize to those people who have have been checking here for new content and release updates because there hasn't been very much lately. I was busy with a variety of different projects outside of the label/blog/distro, etc. I will be contributing much more content to this site regularly due to the many great releases on deck for the label.

I have also been fairly busy with behind the scenes More Than a Witness label stuff the last few months. I'm very excited because the upcoming releases that are taking shape are going to be absolutely killer. Really killer. The first of these releases is the UNITED MUTATION "DARK SELF IMAGE" LP.

This will be my third release and promises to be a serious stunner of ultra-manic dosed-out hardcore. If you aren't familiar with Washington DC's United Mutation and you're a fan of first wave American hardcore punk, you are in for a serious treat. If you're already aware of United Mutation, you almost certainly love their absolutely nightmarish hyper thrash that features some of the most brutal vocals captured during the early years of hardcore punk. This is music for loners and stoners alike, but at the speed of 100 miles per hour. Their debut EP "Fugitive Family" was originally released by Dischord/DSI in early 1983 and is a totally evil ripper of a hardcore platter. Dischord is very happy that this material will be in print once again on my release. United Mutation had a unique vision of what they considered hardcore and these musical contributions have stood the test of time and totally deserve the high quality vinyl reissue treatment.

The "Dark Self Image" LP will feature the classic "Fugitive Family" 7" EP that was originally released in '83 by Dischord/DSI as well as material that has never been officially released, as well as other totally previously unreleased material that went lost for decades on original master tapes stored at Inner Ear Studios. One of these lost tracks is titled "White Amerika", a crazed outtake from the classic "Fugitive Family" 7" session at Inner Ear.

Here's a photo of Don Zientara mastering the United Mutation "Dark Self Image" LP at Inner Ear in late 2011. The "Fugitive Family" 7" EP tracks and the demo recordings have never sounded better! Virtually every unstoppable DC hardcore record was captured by Don in his studio so it made perfect sense for me to work with him on this release.

Here's the lacquer master for the "Dark Self Image" LP being cut by a Neumann lathe as this picture was taken. The lacquer was cut by Dietrich Schoenemann at Complete Mastering. The master cut sounds great: loud, aggressive, but still raw enough to maintain the sound of when this was material was originally recorded.

The test pressings arrived a little while ago and they sound excellent. I'm hoping to have this LP out in late February. The artwork and layout is currently being worked on by myself and Michael Brown, singer of United Mutation. Expect a high quality release featuring tons of unseen photos, flyers, liner notes, session information, and knockout artwork all housed in a swanky gatefold jacket. Many people have asked about a limited edition version of this release that can be obtained directly from me. I have tossed around a few ideas that I think will work well, but I have not fully committed to doing a limited version as of yet. Part of this depends on obtaining the correct materials to make my idea happen. I can say that there will be absolutely no preorders if there is indeed a limited version of this record.

MORE THAN A WITNESS DISTRO UPDATE 8.20.11

Here's the latest More Than a Witness distro update. There hasn't been an update for a few months because I've been utilizing any money I'd have to spend on new distro items for the United Mutation "Dark Self Image" LP (MTAWP #3) and Mecht Mensch "Reacceptance" LP (MTAWP #4) that are due out before this year closes. Anyway, here's a bunch of cool new stuff for sale. I finally decided to go with the alphabetized list format instead of the jumbled, unorganized way I was doing updates in the past. It's much quicker to do it this way and I assume that the most people buying records from a site like this already knows what the item is for the most part. I FOUND A FEW YOUNG REPUBLICANS "COOKOUT EDITION" LIMITED COPIES IN MY ROOM

Ever since the Young Republicans "Sabotage Your Cookout" 7" EP came out this area has been in perpetual disarray making it really difficult to find stuff. A few nights ago I finally decided to do some organizing of this mess and in the process I found a small grip of about a dozen "Cookout Edition" red vinyl mailorder only copies. They were buried underneath a heap of cardboard boxes in a drawer that I haven't looked in for months. The "Cookout Edition" features hand silkscreened covers made out of cookout style tablecloths and a different insert along with the EP on red vinyl. These sold out in one weekend when I first advertised their sale so if you'd like one and missed out the first time around, act quick and you'll score one.

Pictured above with the "Cookout Edition" copies are the second pressing mispress copies that are limited to 50 copies. The plant goofed and accidentally pressed 50 with a small hole when I did the repress instead of the large hole version that I ordered, which there are about 1300 of. I still have a small handful of these remaining so if you'd like one, now would be the best time to get one because I have 5 or 6 left before they're gone for good.

There are a few different purchase options. You can buy a "Cookout Edition" or a limited to 50 mispressing or you can buy both.

Welcome to the latest MORE THAN A WITNESS distro update. There's a ton of great new stuff here that won't last long. I usually post photos of the records for sale, but for the sake of time, this update just features text descriptions. There hasn't been an update in a month and a half because I've been busy working on the label's third release, a UNITED MUTATION LP. That LP should be ready in about a month or so. After that is the MECHT MENSCH LP that should be out this summer.

If you'd like wholesale copies of my 2 releases (CIA "GOD GUTS GUNS & MORE" LP & YOUNG REPUBLICANS "SABOTAGE YOUR COOKOUT" 7" EP), please let me know. Both are well into the second pressing and quantities are dwindling. I only have about 40 CIA LPs left and the YOUNG REPUBLICANS EPs are moving quick too. The LP is $7.25 wholesale while the 7" is $3.75 wholesale.

CHALK CIRCLE - REFLECTION - MISSISSIPPI - $12.50

All girl DC punk rock that's sassy & melodic, far closer to Raincoats/Slits/Lilliput than what you'd usually think of coming out of MacKaye's town. The band only ever played 4 shows, and they only released tracks on compilations at the time. Live recordings, tapes of their basement practices, and demos for a record that Dischord passed on. Tracklisting: Reflection, Uneasy Friend, Scrambled, Private Lie, Turning Up the Collar, The Slap, Run So Far, Easy Escapes, High Stress, Subversive Pleasure. Great stuff!

BRIAN ENO - BBC SESSIONS LP - FANCLUB - $16

Eno left Roxy Music in '74, and had put out 'Warm Jets'. It went better than he thought it would & he suddenly needed to tour. So he whipped up a backing band called the Winkies. Speedier & punkier versions of the songs from this era. Playing them for awhile probably would've gone on to influence Eno's sound, but instead he got plowed down (some say by a car & some say by some groupie's huge wang that he encountered backstage). A collapsed lung stopped the tour after just a few shows. Most cuts are live on the BBC, with a couple stray live ones from a bit later that turned out particularly raunchy. Tracklisting: Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch, Fever, Wimoweh, The Fat Lady of Limbourg, Baby's on Fire, I'll Come Running, Third Uncle, Seven Deadly Finns.

THE REPLACEMENTS - THE EARLY MATS - FANCLUB - $16

This well compiled collection is the definitive document of unreleased Replacements material up until the “Let It Be” era. Including tracks that have never appeared anywhere: “If You Get Married”, “Street Girl”, “Shoot Me Kill Me”, & “Who’s Gonna Take Us Alive” and a slew of red hot alternate outtakes from the “Sorry Ma”, “Hootenanny”, and “Let It Be” sessions. This features only unreleased material and nothing from the recent CD reissues. This collection is a must for any Replacements fan or collector. Features well done artwork & a high quality full color glossy jacket that parodies the “Early Beatles” album cover. CRAMPS - MEMPHIS POSERS LP - FANCLUB - $15

Amazing early recordings from the Cramps. This is from the Alex Chilton produced sessions recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, TN. A little tape hiss is in the mix but amazing sound quality overall considering the age of these recordings. The Chilton production adds an amazing savage edge to the tracks that sound far more wild and raw than the tracks that ended up on ‘Songs The Lord Taught Us’. 12 tracks and an absolute must for the Cramps fan. Made in Italy. Limited edition.

SUBHUMANS - SELF TITLED LP - FANCLUB - $17

Right from the beginning, Canada's punk scene was a diverse and interesting one. The Subhumans are a vital part of that history. Their story starts in 1978 with the top notch DEATH TO THE SICKOIDS 7 inch, and the band, along with their British Columbian peers D.O.A., were one of the best examples of impassioned, unhyphenated punk rock energy to burst into the first half of the '80s. Here's a great fanclub reissue of their debut 12". Such a classic. Euro import. Limited edition.

7 SECONDS - "HARDCORE RULES" LP - FANCLUB - $17

Features the three demos ("Drastic Measures", "Socially Fucked Up", & "3 Chord Politics") that comprised the band's first ever recordings. This is a killer collection because you get all three of these classic recordings on one LP. Limited edition import.

STAR CLUB - COOL POSEURS LP - FANCLUB - $17.50

Cool compilation by this very hard to find Japanese punk/cult band who were responsible for bands like gism, lipcream, and tons more, this contains all their rare early stuff like the "go to hell 7" , "club take one7" "club the star 7"," shut up 7", "star club 6 7" and more. 19 great songs, cool artwork , big booklet. Includes poster. Limited edition. Euro import.

ANTISECT - DEMOS/LIVE 1982 - ANTI SOCIETY - $17.75

Incredible release consisting of '82 demos along with Coventry '82 & Nottingham '82 live recordings. Comes with both a standard LP jacket and a Crass Records style foldout cover! Colored vinyl. Limited edition. This one won't last long so don't sleep on this.

BLACK SABBATH - "ALTERNATE VERSIONS 1969-1971" LP - FANCLUB - $18

Killer collection of alternate versions from the absolute best era of Sabbath! Features a full color sleeve along with excellent sound quality. Limited edition color vinyl pressing of 500 copies. UK import.

SAINT VITUS - 1979 TYRANT DEMO LP - FANCLUB - $18

The first recordings of this legendary metal group. One and only demo from Tyrant before they changed their name to Saint Vitus. I think thats all that needs to be said. Great sound. Limited edition. Euro import.

KILLING JOKE - BBC SESSIONS LP - FANCLUB - $18

Arguably, with the exception of 1983's Fire Dances, the band was at its peak on its first two albums. These five sessions deliver raw, primal versions of most of those album's best cuts (along with some non-album singles), with crystalline fidelity. While it doesn't quite approach the revelatory impact of, say, Bad Brains' Black Dots album, this Peel Sessions disc is a stunning display of a visionary punk band's formative power. Colored vinyl. Limited edition. Euro import.

CRISIS - THE GUILTY HAVE A PAST LP - FANCLUB - $18

Incredible pre Death in June punk band. Features all of their classic singles plus obscure demo recordings. Essential stuff! Limited edition. Euro import.

THE CURE - PILLBOX TALES LP - FANCLUB - $15

A collection of unreleased studio tracks recorded as the Easy Cure and as THE CURE in 1978 and 1979, before and just after the "Three Imaginary Boys" album. Includes "I Want to Be Old," "Meathook," "I'm Cold," "See the Children," "Listen," "I Just Need Myself," "Winter," "Play with Me," and "Faded Smiles." More details to come! 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS - PSYCHEDELIC SOUNDS OF LP - FANCLUB - $17

Did the 13th Floor Elevators invent psychedelic rock? Aficionados will be debating that point for decades, but if Roky Erickson and his fellow travelers into inner space weren't there first, they were certainly close to the front of the line, and there are few albums from the early stages of the psych movement that sound as distinctively trippy -- and remain as pleasing -- as the group's groundbreaking debut, The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. In 1966, psychedelia hadn't been around long enough for its clichés to be set in stone, and Psychedelic Sounds thankfully avoids most of them; while the sensuous twists of the melodies and the charming psychobabble of the lyrics make it sound like these folks were indulging in something stronger than Pearl Beer, at this point the Elevators sounded like a smarter-than-average folk-rock band with a truly uncommon level of intensity.

FINALLY BACK IN PRINT!!! First issued quite a few years back, this famous compilation collects some of the best of Australia's early punk tracks, including classics from RADIO BIRDMAN, THE SCIENTISTS, THOUGHT CRIMINALS, THE NEWS, THE LEFTOVERS, PSYCHO SURGEONS, X, VICTIMS, SCREAMING TRIBESMEN, BABEEZ, NEW CHRISTS, RAZAR, and ROCKS. One of those essentials for fans of '70s "Killed by Death" era punk! Euro import. Limited edition.

BOYS NEXT DOOR - LOST AND BRAVE EXHIBITIONS OF... LP - FANCLUB - $15

The Boys Next Door were one of Australia's premier punk bands and were the first incarnation of the Birthday Party. This is a Italian compilation featuring the songs: Sex Crimes, Enemy of the State, Boots, Masturbation Generation, Boy Hero, Scatterbrain, Nightwatchman, Brave Exhibitions, Friends of My World, The Voice, Roman, Roman, and Somebody's Watching from 1977-1979. This was some of Nick Cave's earliest work and was the stepping stone for the rest of his career. Great screened jacket! Euro import. Limited edition.

THIN LIZZY - BBC SESSIONS LP - FANCLUB - $18.25

Killer collection of BBC tracks recorded from 1972-1977 from this legendary hard rocking Irish band. Excellent sleeve along with colored vinyl. Limited edition of 500 copies. This is a must for any Thin Lizzy fan. This won't last long, so don't sleep.

One of the greatest Midwest hardcore records ever and certainly one of the best full length hardcore LPs ever released. This is their high point. This is simply a must! Limited Euro import. I only have a small handful of copies.

Red hot show features the classic DC hardcore band in their prime. Such killer stuff. Nice full color fold over sleeve and great sound on the LP. The record sleeve specifically notes: "no reggae on this album... it was taken off to give you the best punk LP". Haha. Limited edition and on neon pink vinyl.

THE USERS - KICKS IN STYLE 1976-79 LP - RAVE UP - $17

Here's a collection of the best recordings by this briefly hot late-'70s Cambridge/London punk band. Their first single, out in May 1977 on the appropriately named Raw label, was abrasive, spit-in-yer-face punk, while their second, out in Dec. 1978 on their own Warped label, was produced by original SEX PISTOLS producer and soundman Dave Goodman, who also recorded much more material that was never released as well as playing bass on some of these tracks. Though not specifically credited, the tracks here seem to include "Sick of You" and "I'm in Love with Today" from their 1st 7", an unreleased early version of "Dead on Arrival" from those sessions, the great UNDERTONES-with-fangs "Kicks in Style" from their 2nd 7" plus the unreleased "All I Get" from the same sessions, the 1978 live track "Bad Decision," and 3 more unreleased Goodman- produced tracks from 1979: "Listen," "It's Not True,

THE WASPS - THAT WAS PUNK LP - RAVE UP - $17

Formed in February 1976, this was one of London's earliest punk bands, evolving out of the mid-'70s hard rock scene. Regulars at venues like The Roxy and The Bridge House, their first single, the frantic "Teenage Treats," was released in Nov. 1977 on the 4-Play label, and picked up just the following month by Miles Copeland's Illegal Records. At the same time, they had two tracks on the "Live at the Vortex" LP on the NEMS label, one of which, "Can't Wait 'Til '78," soon popped up on a split single with the band MEAN STREETS that included a young Gary Numan. A John Peel session followed 2 months later, and after some lineup changes a 2nd single, "Rubber Cars," on RCA and a 2nd Peel session were finally completed a year later, before finally splitting for good a few months into 1979. This LP has 11 tracks, including those live Vortex tracks "Can't Wait 'Til '78" and a very punky cover of "Waiting for My Man," the unreleased 1976 studio track "Stranger Love," two unreleased 1977 studio tracks ("Free Country" and "Run Run Angelica"), "Teenage Treats" and "She Made Magic" from their first 7", plus the unsourced" JJJJenny," "Evil Man," "Something to Tell You," and "He's Back." YOUNG REPUBLICANS - "SABOTAGE YOUR COOKOUT" 7" - MORE THAN A WITNESS PRODUCT - $5

Finally found after going missing for nearly 25 years (and doubted by some to even exist), the Young Republicans demo cassette is certainly one of the most elusive and infamous artifacts in the history of hardcore and is truly a special item. This hardcore holy grail was recorded in ’83 and only given to a handful of close friends before the band split and ¾ of the band would go on to form the initial lineup of the influential New York hardcore group YOUTH OF TODAY. This 9 song EP captures the absolute essence of spirited hardcore under the shroud of Reagan: snot-nosed teens going faster MPH while standing in opposition to teachers, parents, rednecks, & suburbia. Highly catchy & classic sounding, this could easily be considered the absolutely crucial missing NYHC or CT hardcore 7” EP from 1983.

CIA - "GOD GUTS GUNS & MORE" LP - MORE THAN A WITNESS PRODUCT - $10.25

Legions of hardcore diehards would argue that C.I.A.'s "God, Guns, Guts" 7" is one of the best U.S. hardcore singles to ever be released. Originally self-released in 1983, the six songs on the original 7" are blasts of driving, intelligent and furious hardcore. This deluxe reissue adds five original 7" session outtakes that have never been heard until now along with several other previously unreleased essential demos recorded just before the 7" came out, plus two tracks recorded live at the Anthrax club in Connecticut in 1983.

THE AUTHORITIES - "SOUNDTRACK FOR TROUBLE" 7" - GET HIP - $5.25

KLEENEX/LILIPUT - "S/T" 4 LP SET - MISSISSIPPI - $45

One of the most unique punk bands of our time, hailed from Zurich, Switzerland. From 1978-80, KLEENEX gigged around, recorded two 7-inches and toured the UK with such acts as Gang Of Four, Subway Sect, The Swell Maps and The Raincoats. In 1980, the group changed their name to LILIPUT (due to pressures from the Kleenex tissue company) and continued under that moniker until their demise in 1983. As Liliput, three more 7-inches and two LPs were released as the band evolved through numerous personnel changes. Finally the entire contents of the ever-popular Kill Rock Stars double CD is now available as a 4-LP set. Housed in sturdy tip-on sleeve slipcases with full-color 12-page booklets.

ROBERT POLLARD - "MOSES ON A SNAIL" LP - GBV INC - $15

Has any artist had a run like Robert Pollard since he struck out on his own with the launch of GBV Inc. in 2008? With the release of Moses on a Snail, Pollard has put out an unbelievable twelve albums in a span of roughly two years--and that's not even including all the various EPs, singles and a (third) box set of outtakes and unreleased tracks.

Moses on a Snail contains a dozen amazingly strong Pollard compositions. Even for the ridiculously prolific songwriter, this was a notable writing session as ten of the twelve songs were written in one sitting. As Pollard describes the process, he started with a notebook of working song titles, and penned 22 songs in a single afternoon's creative burst. He discarded over half, and ten songs were picked to later revise and flesh out. He made demos to send to frequent producer / collaborator Todd Tobias, who recorded the instruments before Pollard did his final vocals.

This batch of songs finds a somber, more reflective, yet ultimately triumphant Pollard on such instant classics as "Arrows and Balloons," "Each Is Good in His Own House," "It's a Pleasure Being You" and the enormous title track, which culminates in a dramatic (and atypical) minute-long guitar lead to close the album. Elsewhere, the elegiac "Teardrop Paintballs" delivers seriously heartbreaking melodies, and the (dare we call it) mellow "The Weekly Crow" reminds us to mention that there will be a Pollard composition on the forthcoming Glen Campbell album.

Clocking in at a concise 36 minutes, Moses on a Snail begs to be played over and over again as it reveals itself more with each listen. It's an album that prompts the question: "What is Robert Pollard going to do next to top this one?"

MALEFICE - "OVERBOARD" - DSI RECORDS - ORIGINAL UNPLAYED DEADSTOCK - $6.50

New lower price. This is now $6.50 instead of $7 as I'm looking to get rid of my final copies of this. This is part of a recent deadstock find that I obtained from John Fox of United Mutation/DSI Records. This is new and unplayed. Here's your chance to grab a nice clean copy of this.

Incredibly underrated record. Malefice isn’t quite as metallic as Void’s lost Potion of Bad Dreams, but they’re drinking from the same well. They’re a bit speedier, and the vocals are a little more unhinged, but the guitar work is also a little less flashy and more tame. You won’t find the lost Void record by picking up the Malefice 7″, but if you’re a fan of the 80’s pscyho-core style, you should dig this. If I had to pinpoint this I’d say take some Void, some UM, and a bit of Venom or maybe 7″ era Obsessed and you’re pretty close to what this sounds like. Blue vinyl.

HEART ATTACK - "TOXIC LULLABIES" LP - FANCLUB - $15

Killer collection of material from this early NYHC band. I was familiar with the band's vinyl output--three of the most killer slabs of early hardcore punk from NYC--but the whole first side of this great bootleg collects two 1980 demo sessions that have great sound quality and great tunes as well. If you're not familiar with Heart Attack, they were a bit more on the "punk" end of things compared to bands like Antidote and Urban Waste, coming across like a tougher, NYC version of early Toxic Reasons or west coast punk like Adolescents or CH3. Basically, this is tough, melodic punk inspired by '77 bands like UK Subs, and for that style it doesn't get any better than this.

CHEAP TIME - "FANTASTIC EXPLANATIONS" LP - IN THE RED - $15

Some people didn't know what to make of Cheap Time's self-titled debut album when it was released in 2008. It was a huge leap from their first 7-inch of the year before, and it didn't really sound like anything else going at that time. Too glamtastic and bubblegum for the garage purists and too raw for indie rockers. Cheap Time's new album, entitled Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations), proves that they are capable of still further artistic leaps. Guitarist / songwriter Jeffrey Novak soaks up his influences and spits out new songs with more complex structures and melodies than ever before, while bassist Stephen Braren adds backbone to the songs with his heavily compressed Roy-Wood-style playing, and new drummer Ryan Sweeney tightens up the sound while still keeping things very loose. The Fantastic Explanations sessions have also become something of legend--tracking for the album ended abruptly after engineer Mike McHugh suffered a breakdown and kicked the band out of the studio at gunpoint. Once the tapes were retrieved over a month later, Earle Mankey (ex-Sparks member and producer of the Quick's Mondo Deco and The Runaways' Queens of Noise) was brought in to mix the final album, which turned out to be a perfect match! Anyone who saw Cheap Time on tour last year opening for Yo La Tengo will be pleased with the way these new songs have turned out on record. Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations) will surely surprise, divide and leave fans scratching their heads as to where Cheap Time will go next!

DEATH - "SPIRITUAL MENTAL PHYSICAL" LP - DRAG CITY - $16.50

Spiritual-Mental-Physical is a collection of wild early DEATH demos, presenting the three young HACKNEY brothers consolidating their powers as they embark on a trip into pure rock and roll music. For many years following the emergence of punk rock, nothing changed. Punk bands either signed contracts and played the rock band game or they lived in a world parallel to the world of commercial rock and roll. Farther along came “the year that punk broke,” a puzzling decade and a half after the whole thing had first been absorbed into the mainstream in the last of the 1970s. And so it was. The books were written; the pronouncements made. Then came news of Death. They’d self-released a single in 1976; the tracks made it onto an unheard punk compilation a couple decades later. In 2008, an obsessive young man tracked them down and found that the surviving two brothers had master tapes from all those years ago. These made up the truly senses-shattering album…For The Whole World To See. Suddenly, the book was open again and the history of punk rock needed to be rewritten to include Death. The sounds on …For the Whole World To See are those of young men, scorching their influences in the process of becoming new.

Spiritual-Mental-Physical gives us Death by transistor radio, with a tinnyyet- furious sound representing the 1970s environment of Death. Here, the musical landscape that inspired them is more clearly defined as they demo material that didn’t make it to the studio, but shares the same ferocious bent as “Politicians In My Eyes,” “Keep On Knocking,” and the rest of ...For the Whole World To See. Spiritual-Mental-Physical is an inside look at Death’s early days, one that fans of the group and fans of punk rock (and, indeed, rock of all kinds) are sure to enjoy for the rest of time.

STRIKE - "RADIO SONGS" 7" - SING SING - $6.50

Strike were a four-piece powerpop band from Belfast consisting of Mark Nixon (v), Noel Rafferty (gtr), Paul Kenny (gtr), Laurence Sprott (b) and Davy Johnston (d). Their sole release was 'Radio Songs' b/w "Teenage Rebel", an amazing 45 issued by the "Shock Rock" label in 1980 an edition of only 500 copies. Shock Rock was setup up by Outlet, a traditional / folk recording studio and label to cash in on punk in Belfast in 1980 but both tracks are well crafted pop songs and its unfortunate that the band didn't go on to more releases. (A later version of Strike featuring a female singer did have a couple tracks on a Shock Rock compilation aptly titled 'Belfast')

GG ALLIN - "ALWAYS WAS, IS, AND ALWAYS SHALL BE" LP - FANCLUB - $17

G.G. Allin's debut album is a raging, disturbingly sincere testament to all out, off the rails rock and roll fun at anyone's expense; he puts on a virtual clinic demonstrating his big fat wild streak. Allin is backed by a competent band playing Stooges-style riffs, and he himself is often quite tuneful; this is enough to make the songs some of his best musical material. This is an absolute punk rock classic. A must! Limited Euro import...

Amazingly enough, the violent hatred, sexual and psychological degradation, and staggering stupidity only hint at the heights (or depths) Allin would reach later.

GG ALLIN - "YOU HATE ME AND I HATE YOU" LP - FANCLUB - $17

For better and worse, GG Allin was a legend. Until he finally bit the big one on June 29, 1993, this self-immolating jockstrap-clad mace-spraying dung-flinging aberration survived his own berserk reputation (not to mention his recklessly self-destructive instincts) to become the worst nightmare the Dead Boys and Iggy never had. Allin was a relentlessly obnoxious, coarse and lewd extremist who could send even the most generous-minded liberal over the edge. His catalogue is a juggernaut of puerile mania, demented concupiscence and Hustler-level humor. This album is a fine example of such claims. Includes his absolute best material from 1980-85. Limited Euro import.

SOUTHSIDE STRANGLERS - "STRANGLE YOU" 7" - FASHIONABLE IDIOTS - $5

Killer stuff!!!! Richmond, VA bad boys return with their second vinyl offering of speedy punk thats catchier than the clap and twice as infectious. This single will surely hold you over till the release of their rumored LP.

NAKED RAYGUN "THROB THROB" LP - HAUNTED TOWN - $12

Total classic! Finally back in print on colored vinyl, hand-numbered out of 800 is this second full-length from Chicago punk legends Naked Raygun, with their one-of-a-kind mid tempo melodic punk rock which kicks off with one of their best songs, "Rat Patrol."

BIRTHDAY PARTY - "JUNKYARD" LP - FANCLUB - $17

The Party's second and final full studio album, also the final release with the five-person lineup, was perhaps its scuzzy masterpiece, its art/psych/blues/punk fusion taken to at times outrageous heights. Right from its start, nobody held back on anything, Cave's now-demonic vocals in full roar while the rest of the players revamped rhythm & blues and funk into a blood-soaked cabaret exorcism. Nearly every tune is a Party classic one way or another, from the opening slow, sexy grind of "She's Hit," Cave's freaked tale of death and destruction matched by clattering percussion and a perversely crisp guitar from Howard, to the ending title track's crawl toward a last gruesome ending.

HOMOSTUPIDS - "NIGHT DEACON" 7" - FASHIONABLE IDIOTS - $5

Here we have six brand new tracks from the best band in America. The songs featured here are better than all previous recordings, side B kicks off with a 'stupids' traditional re-recorded by a mandolin quartet. This wonderful record is a must have for morons worldwide.

This is limited tour-only edition of the recent (and now quickly out of print to not be repressed) offering on Rock 'N Roll Blitzkrieg. Features unique handmade sleeves and red colored vinyl with a unique screen printed back. The back of the is hand numbered. If you want this, don't sleep on it. It'll be gone pretty quickly as I only obtained a small grip from the label.

The story goes that X-Aspirations, one of the most important and underrated albums of the punk era in Australia, was recorded in a mere five hours. The scoop, published almost 30 years later on the eve of its reissue, was that it actually took just four. "It was a Saturday afternoon at Trafalgar Studio in Sydney," said Debbie Nankervis, who was married to producer Lobby Loyde at the time, in a recent interview. "The band belted out 13 fantastic songs, one after another." Then they all went out to Manly to see Rose Tattoo and fuck themselves up on weed and beer.

One of the best punk albums ever recorded, hands down.

DILLINGER FOUR - "THE BOOTLEG" 12" - FANCLUB - $15

This one-sided 12" features four songs recorded live on the BBC from Twin Cities melodic punks Dillinger Four and comes in a heavy, tip-on sleeve. A very nice fan-created item that will be gone before you know it. Get it now or get it on eBay for twice as much in the future.

PRIMITIVE CALCULATORS / SLUG GUTS SPLIT 7" - SWEET ROT - $7

Sweet Rot is thrilled to present a split 7” by legendary Australian noise merchants PRIMITIVE CALCULATORS and Brisbane, Australia’s swamp gang SLUG GUTS. This record features three previously unreleased versions of the Primitive Calculators quasi single/hit "Ugly Pumping Muscle." You get a devastating version recorded by Primitive Calculators in 1979 in the practice room of the band’s home in Fitzroy, Melbourne. As well as this, they contribute an equally fierce and driving live version recorded in 2009 following their memorable reunion at All Tomorrow’s Parties in Melbourne. Not to be outdone, Slug Guts (2nd LP coming soon on Sacred Bones) darkly interpret ‘Ugly Pumping Muscle’ and give it their own unique twist. For fans of Screamers, Suicide, DFA, etc.

MARKED MEN - "ON" B/W "THE OTHER SIDE" 7" - 540 RECORDS - $5

The Marked Men are simply one of the best modern punk bands right now and this is a great example of their prowess. This is a two-song single from Texas group and continues in their melodic power-pop sound that's comparable to The Exploding Hearts, The Replacements or the Buzzcocks. BIRTHDAY PARTY - "PRAYERS ON FIRE" LP - FANCLUB - $17

It should come as no surprise that there is an album in Nick Cave's oeuvre called Prayers on Fire; a fascination with the dark, (self-)destructive side of religion is more than evident in his later work with the Bad Seeds. While there might not be any of the explicit Biblical imagery on Prayers on Fire that Cave would later ejaculate, the title of the album is apt, and its aptness is revealed almost immediately. Over the tribal thud of floor toms, shards of trebly guitar, the throb of an organ, and even a creepily out-of-place trumpet come the possessed, chant-like vocals -- not an incantation to any god, but to "Zoo-Music Girl." It's the religion of depraved sexuality, bestial urges, and sadomasochism. "We spend our lives in a box full of dirt/I murder her dress till it hurts/I murder her dress and she loves it," howls Cave, echoing Leonard Cohen and finally concluding with the berserk plea, "Oh! God! Please let me die beneath her fists." Meanwhile, Cave sounds like he's actually being assaulted by the music, emitting horrific gasps and primitive grunts. And this is only the first track.

PURE HELL - "NOISE ADDICTION" LP - WELFARE - $11

In 1974, on the streets of Philadelphia, a band unlike any other was formed. They called themselves Pretty Poison. The band consisted of Stinker (Kenny Gordon) on vocals, Chip Wreck (Preston Morris III) on guitar, Lenny Steel (Kerry Boles) on bass, and Spider (Michael Sanders) on drums. They had a sound so ahead of its time that the music industry was not yet ready for it. They coupled the punk sound of the New York bands of the time with a harder, faster heavy metal edge unheard before. Their unique sound was a result of Gordon's berserk choreography and Morris's needling guitar riffs, while Steel and Spider added a synchronized barrage with no nonsense execution to the arsenal.

Inspired by the famous fuel-altered dragster, they changed their name to Pure Hell in 1975. Soon after, they moved to New York City where they played with bands like the New York Dolls, Sid Vicious, Wayne County and the Electric Chairs, The Dead Boys, The Stimulators, Richard Hell, The Germs, The Nuns, The Cramps and more. In 1978 Pure Hell headlined a tour of the UK, with bands like The UK Subs, Wilko Johnson, Vermilion & the Aces and more opening for them. While in the UK, their only original record was released. It was a single released by their manager Curtis Knight on his label, Golden Sphinx Records. The songs on the single were “These Boots Were Made for Walking” and “No Rules.” The single charted in the top 40 charts in the UK. During the same year, a full length album was recorded but was never released. It did not surface again for 26 years…

Up until that time, they had only released the Legless Bull 7-inch EP, and the tape they recorded early 1982 would take over a year and a half to be released as the Make An Effort 7-inch EP. The members of G.I. excelled at driving each other crazy and there was a lot of arguing, but still we had a great session at Inner Ear and we managed to track 20 songs in one day. From the beginning the band had been divided on what to record, and it was only after much debate that they decided to leave off the material they had recorded with the earlier line-ups and only put out 10 new songs. In early 1983 Dischord was strapped for cash, meaning that we could only work on one release at a time. Since all of our money was tied up with the manufacturing of Minor Threat’s Out of Step 12-inch EP, the G.I. record would have to wait. A new DC label, Fountain of Youth expressed an interest in releasing Boycott Stabb, so it was decided to do a ‘split-label’ record. In this case, Fountain of Youth put up the money and we let them use the Dischord Records name to help with context and distribution. It has since been reissued on a number of different labels and formats, but after coming across the master tapes and hearing the songs that had been left off, we thought it would be cool to release the complete session, and to fi nally release the record on Dischord proper. In going through the tapes, I discovered that most of the outtake songs were never mixed, so earlier this year I took the recordings back into the studio.

Hearing the separated tracks amazed me. Such great playing and songs! With the technological advances in the recording world making multi-tracking and overdubbing so common, it’s easy to forget that studios could also be used as something more akin to a photo-booth, capturing what was happening at that very moment. Most of the early Dischord sessions were essentially ‘live’ recordings, so the bands had to be able to play, and because the budgets were minuscule, they had to get the songs down in short order. SONIC YOUTH - "DAYDREAM NATION" 4 LP DELUXE BOX SET W/ 16 PAGE BOOKLET - GOOFIN - $32

Daydream Nation was Sonic Youth’s sixth album, their first double LP, and their last for an indie label before signing with Geffen. Widely considered to be their watershed moment, Daydream Nation catapulted them into the mainstream and proved that indie bands could enjoy wide commercial success without compromising their artistic vision. The original 1988 album has been remastered under the band’s supervision. The bonus platters begin with previously unreleased live performances from the Daydream Nation Tour. Culled from performances at CBGB in New York, The Paradiso in Amsterdam, and several other primo venues, “Live Daydream” includes live versions of every song on the original album. Added to that are four studio bonuses: “Within You, Without You” (a Beatles cover from the NME-sponsored charity Beatles tribute album Sgt. SPITS - "S/T FOURTH ALBUM" LP - IN THE RED - $13.50

In The Red is proud to announce the vinyl (re)issue of The Spits' latest (and fourth) self-titled full-length LP. Originally released by the band late last year on their own Thriftstore Records, the album carries on in the psychedelic skate-punk band's grand tradition of anarchy, chaos, stupidity and destruction--all delivered with an artisan's skill that proves these guys are the real deal. This is the precursor to the brand new Spits album, currently in the works, that will be out on In The Red later this year.

The Spits show no sign of slowing down with their latest effort, mixing equal parts Devo and Misfits into an aurally addictive, synth-inflected stew. Describing the music they play as "punk for the people," these prophets of the proletariat have a message for the masses: The Spits are the soundtrack to the apocalypse.

The band has never shied away from esoteric subject matter. Previous records have contained themes of escaped Nazi war criminals, nuclear winters, commie spies and terrorist attacks, coupled with back alley booze-fests, brain-bruising bong rips, skateboards and fisticuffs. With songs about constable evasion ("Police"), Huxley-esque visions of metropolitan horror ("Eyesore City") and alien abduction ("Alienize"), The Spits' fourth should prove to be just as desperately disparate and sonically sordid as previous salvos. It's their strongest to date, showcasing a band that is only beginning to approach the zenith of its power, as the world dips entropically past its own, toward obliteration. CHRONIC SICK - S/T 7" - NO WAY RECORDS - $5

Finally reissued legitimately/band authorized after 27 years. Great NJHC from 1983. The original of the hc/kbd classic on MUTHA RECORDS goes for up to 500.00 on ebay so jump on this now to get it at a reasonable price. 3 songs of catchy, snotty reagan era hardcore the way it was meant to be. Short, fast, and loud. The front cover art to this record is a dead give away- you need this! Restored and Remastered by Dave Eck at Lucky Lacquers, and what a great job he did on this.

UV RACE - "I HATE YOU" - FASHIONABLE IDIOTS - $5

Four brand new cuts of UV Race's unique Aussie punk meets name it kbd slop. A fantastic effort from these Australian knobs, dont miss it. Great stuff!!!

MANIPULATION - S/T 7" - FASHIONABLE IDIOTS - $5

Manipulation is a hardcore band from Chicago with members of Chronic Seizure, Pedestrians, and Civic Progress according to the label website. What's inside is furious hardcore that's doing everything right; I've played this record at least ten times every day since I've gotten it. Includes three songs from their demo and two new (I guess) ones as well. I only hope that ripping on my awful equipment does it justice. Someone claimed this was going to be some of the best material of 2010, and I can see why it might have been. Check this out, and if you like it, buy a copy.

THE COMES - "NO SIDE & OUTSIDER COMPILATION" LP - FANCLUB - $15

Excellent quality fanclub release of this classic female-fronted Japanese hardcore band. Includes their 11-song No Side LP and their cuts from the elusive Outsider compilation LP. Ultra classic material. Maybe the best Japanese 12" ever. A must for any fan of Japanese hardcore. Euro import. Limited edition.

RAMONES/UNDERTONES - "PUNK ROCK SLIDE" DOUBLE LP - FANCLUB - $20

Very well done fanclub release. This is a great double LP on blue vinyl and features incredible sound with a fantastic sleeve. The first three sides of this double set are 29 tracks from The Ramones are recorded live in Indianapolis 6/012/1978.Side four features six songs by the Undertones recorded when they played on the Rockpalast television show recorded in Grugahalle, Essen, Germany, 10/17/1982. MECHT MENSCH GATEFOLD DISCOGRAPHY LP COMING SOON ON MORE THAN A WITNESS PRODUCT

For those who are not familiar with Mecht Mensch, they were purveyors of killer Midwest style hardcore in the same vein as Die Kruezen and other bands that pushed paint by numbers style thrash into the domain of the uniquely psychotic. Their debut 5 song 7" EP "Acceptance" is a true testament to dissonant hardcore. This classic EP is reminiscent of the aforementioned Die Kruezen or perhaps No Trend after some really cheap speed. One of the best all-time Midwest hardcore EPs. This 7" was recorded by Butch Vig who'd later go on to produce Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins.

I'm incredibly excited to officially announce that my fourth release will be a Mecht Mensch discography LP. This release will include the absolutely classic "Acceptance" 7" EP from '83 as well as the tracks from the Tar Babies split cassette from '82 as well as other solid unreleased material. This release will feature a beautiful gatefold jacket with tons of great photos, liner notes, and other relevant art & ephemera. This release has been in the making for nearly 10 years but things are now things in perfect alignment and this should be out before summer.

YOUNG REPUBLICANS "SABOTAGE YOUR COOKOUT" 7" SECOND PRESS SMALL HOLE MISPRESSING

After selling out of the first pressing of 1000 copies of the Young Republicans "Sabotage Your Cookout" 7" EP rather quickly, I called up the plant and ordered a repressing of another quick 300 copies. I guess whoever was operating the record press wasn't paying attention or something and 50 of these 300 repress copies were pressed with a small hole instead of a big hole. I always thought the big hole 7" looked better and much more classic so I never intended on doing any with a small center hole. So if you're keeping score there's 1250 with small hole and only 50 of this 7" with a small hole due to this mistake by the pressing plant.

If anyone would like to order one of these unique singles, you can do that below. I can't imagine these won't last very long so don't sleep if you'd like one.

"ADVENTURE JUKEBOX" RADIO SHOW - WXCI-FM, DANBURY, CT. 1985. HOSTED BY RAY CAPPO

I've long been a fan of regional college radio programs that had the audacity to play hardcore punk on the airwaves during it's formative years. The 1980s American hardcore scene will probably be forever indebted to programs like the seminal Maximum Rock & Roll radio show as well as more regionally focused programs like WNYU-FM's "Noise the Show". These radio shows were so essential at the time because they represented the starkest opposition to the then (and now, sadly) flaccid brand of corporate FM radio. More specifically, these pioneering shows gave listeners a chance to hear all of the great new records that were coming out at the time, advertisements for local hardcore gigs, and interviews with local and touring bands.

The "Adventure Jukebox" was the premier hardcore punk college radio show in the western Connecticut area for quite awhile. Broadcasted from the campus of Western Connecticut State University (my alma mater), this show began sometime in the early 1980s and presumably ended sometime in the late 80s. "Adventure Jukebox" was hosted by a fellow named Darryl Ohrt. Much like the aforementioned MRR & "Noise" radio shows mentioned above, "Adventure Jukebox" focused on all of the rad newly released underground music that was coming out at the time as well as spreading the word about local hardcore punk shows that were happening at the Anthrax in Stamford (and later, Norwalk).These gigs featured top notch touring bands and as well as blossoming local hardcore bands. During the early 80s, the Connecticut hardcore scene was flourishing quickly because of such exciting bands like CIA, Vatican Commandoes, 76% Uncertain, Violent Children, Lost Generation, Reflex From Pain, Seizure, No Milk On Tuesday, Young Republicans, etc. "Adventure Jukebox" was responsible for playing these killer bands on the radio before anyone else.

This specific episode posted here for download is pretty cool because it features a set of crucial tracks hand picked by Danbury native Ray Cappo, right around the time that the mighty Youth of Today formed. The first few tracks on this tape have Daryl Ohrt as DJ but the majority of the tape features Ray. It's possible that Daryl was there in the studio the day this was recorded since the "AJ" was his radio show or those tracks are from an earlier broadcast.

Essentially, this serves as an enjoyable mix tape for me. Ray picks a bunch of ultra classic tracks (all of them, nearly) that are favorites of his and plays them live on the radio. It's really awesome to hear bands like Discharge, 7 Seconds, Code of Honor, DOA, and Urban Waste played on the radio within a few years of these records being released. It must have been very exciting times to hear this kind of music on local radio and be involved in the underground. These days, college radio is far less exciting as it's more or less a bastion of formulaic fluff selected by independent labels with major label tactics. Come to think of it, the disintegration of contemporary college radio into a consolidated mass of CMJ and Pitchfork Media approved sterility is quite ironic when you consider how the medium got it's start.

This broadcast was recorded sometime during 1985. I don't have a more specific date because the cassette master doesn't provide any other information than this year. I've been meaning to ask Ray Cappo if he has any additional information about this tape, but I'd imagine recalling anything like this would be analogous to me remembering something I did when I was 13. You can also see that some tracks were cut out by the original taper.

I am down to my final copies of my first release, CIA's "God Guts Guns & More" LP. The first pressing of 1000 copies sold out in the blink of an eye and I quickly repressed another 350 copies. PANIC - "13" LP - SING SING - $13

Sing Sing are proud to announce the reissue of this Dutch masterpiece of punk rock from Amsterdam's Panic! Their debut release from '78 simply titled '13' is a powerful album of perfectly constructed, attitude-riddled punk numbers from start to finish. Nevermind the Sex Pistols references on the album cover, Panic aren't getting their sounds from Rotten & Co. but with songs like "He Can Come" and "13" we're sure they picked up a thing or two about vulgarity from those chaps. Panic's sound, however, is uniquely successful and no doubt plays a part in the albums reputation amongst collectors.

PANIC formed in 1977 as a follow up to the short lived band “Big Peter and the Terrible Garage” (see poster on album cover). In 1978 PANIC’s LP 13 was released by two labels; first by Universe (red vinyl) and then by Ariola (black vinyl). The reissue comes in a gatefold jacket with liner notes by Peter Penthouse, unseen band photos and your own personal copy of the 'Big Peter' poster.

KLEENEX/LILIPUT - "S/T" 4 LP SET - MISSISSIPPI - $50

One of the most unique punk bands of our time, hailed from Zurich, Switzerland. From 1978-80, KLEENEX gigged around, recorded two 7-inches and toured the UK with such acts as Gang Of Four, Subway Sect, The Swell Maps and The Raincoats. In 1980, the group changed their name to LILIPUT (due to pressures from the Kleenex tissue company) and continued under that moniker until their demise in 1983. As Liliput, three more 7-inches and two LPs were released as the band evolved through numerous personnel changes. Finally the entire contents of the ever-popular Kill Rock Stars double CD is now available as a 4-LP set. Housed in sturdy tip-on sleeve slipcases with full-color 12-page booklets.

DOA - "HARDCORE '81" LP - SUDDEN DEATH - $15.50

Essential to own this! A first-time LP reissue of the classic second album from Canadian punk rock pioneers DOA. Includes all eleven tracks from the original release—including the awesome "DOA," "Slumlord," "Unknown," "Waiting For You," "Smash the State," and "Race Riot"—along with three tracks taken from the band's 1984 Don't Turn Yer Back On Desperate Times EP, recorded at the BBC studios for JOHN PEEL.

This came straight from John Fox, the guitar player of United Mutation. I'm sure you already know this is simply one of the best US hardcore EPs ever. This is basically new. This sat in a box for years and has not been played. This is absolutely mint. Totally wild, dark stuff. One of my favorites ever. I've been getting $100 for these on eBay not long ago so I'd venture to say that $65 is a nice bargain.

MALEFICE - "OVERBOARD" - DSI RECORDS - ORIGINAL UNPLAYED DEADSTOCK - $6.50

New lower price. This is now $6.50 instead of $7 as I'm looking to get rid of my final copies of this.

This is part of a recent deadstock find that I obtained from John Fox of United Mutation/DSI Records. This is new and unplayed. Here's your chance to grab a nice clean copy of this.

Incredibly underrated record. Malefice isn’t quite as metallic as Void’s lost Potion of Bad Dreams, but they’re drinking from the same well. They’re a bit speedier, and the vocals are a little more unhinged, but the guitar work is also a little less flashy and more tame. You won’t find the lost Void record by picking up the Malefice 7″, but if you’re a fan of the 80’s pscyho-core style, you should dig this. If I had to pinpoint this I’d say take some Void, some UM, and a bit of Venom or maybe 7″ era Obsessed and you’re pretty close to what this sounds like. Blue vinyl.

BUTTHOLE SURFERS - "PSYCHIC POWERLESS... ANOTHER MAN'S SAC" LP - TOUGH AND GO - EX/EX - $15

Here's a nice used (but loved) copy of this classic from my collection. I have doubles.

The Surfers' Touch and Go debut remains their highlight for many fans, an inspired blast of ugly noise, knowing idiocy, drugged-out insanity and some backhanded surprises. Haynes is still relatively interpretable here; the vocal distortions are only on a few songs, like the opening "Concubine," and what one can't quite understand one can still sense. The band's self-production brings out the mighty rumbles of drummers Coffey and Nervosa and Leary's avant-junkyard guitar work with clarity and a big, thick punch. Leary begins with screwy blues and gentle strums, then cranks up the amps and lets fly. The band also officially recorded their semi-theme song "Butthole Surfer," after which they were accidentally named; the bizarro backing vocals and sudden sped-up shifts at the end are just part of the oddities on display.

"Negro Observer" is one of the most straightforward, calmest songs of the bunch, and even that's saying something, with Haynes going off about the title characters -- described as aliens coming to "count heads in singles bars" -- like a barely stable street crazy, insane laughter and all. When it comes to full-on craziness, though, nothing beats the obscene "Lady Sniff," which sounds like an amped-up blues act fronted by a 100-year-old man, and the hallucinatory "Mexican Caravan," with Haynes raving about "that heroin BROWN!" The nods to rock history are subtle but present, from the Black Sabbath-quoting (specifically "Children of the Grave") opening rhythm of "Dum Dum" to the fried Tex/Mex-ranting of "Gary Floyd," written about the legendary Dicks bandleader. However, the Surfers' crazy blend is completely distinctive, taking punk and the inspiration of their acid-addled Texas forebears to new heights.

BUTTHOLE SURFERS - "REMBRANT PUSSYHORSE" LP - TOUCH AND GO - EX/EX - $15

Here's a nice used copy from my collection of this classic record. I have two.

Everything seems to start almost normally on Pussyhorse with "Creep in the Cellar," even with the rather gone violin line -- Haynes is intelligible, the piano part is quiet serene. Then again, Haynes is talking about the creep in question doing things like taking off his skin, so clearly all is still at least somewhat tweaked in Surferland. The rest of the album makes that pretty clear; if not quite as strong as Psychic...Powerless, Pussyhorse is still a strong slice of homegrown art/psychedelia gone to a murky hell. Gentler songs like "Sea Ferring" still have a distinct queasiness to them, its sea chanty feeling undercut by the nagging bassline and Haynes' yelps. When the group goes totally nuts, as on a drum-blasting, squiggly voiced cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" that makes the later Lenny Kravitz version seem like the redundant slice of nostalgia it is, no prisoners are taken.

HEART ATTACK - "TOXIC LULLABIES" LP - FANCLUB - $16

Only a few of these left. Act quick! Doubtful I'll be able to get more copies in.

Killer collection of material from this early NYHC band. I was familiar with the band's vinyl output--three of the most killer slabs of early hardcore punk from NYC--but the whole first side of this great bootleg collects two 1980 demo sessions that have great sound quality and great tunes as well. If you're not familiar with Heart Attack, they were a bit more on the "punk" end of things compared to bands like Antidote and Urban Waste, coming across like a tougher, NYC version of early Toxic Reasons or west coast punk like Adolescents or CH3. Basically, this is tough, melodic punk inspired by '77 bands like UK Subs, and for that style it doesn't get any better than this.

INFEST - "SLAVE" LP - FANCLUB - $16

Last copy. I doubt I'll be able to get this hard to find release back in.

INFEST were a southern California hardcore whirlwind. They can be credited to almost inventing a genre (power-violence), and just played the hardest, heaviest, fastest hardcore in back their. This LP came out officially in 1988 on Off The Disk records out of Switzerland. This LP consists of non-stop power-violence of only the best variety. The heavy-fuzz and the storming vocals are just about unbeatable. One of the best hardcore LPs ever.

CHEAP TIME - "FANTASTIC EXPLANATIONS" LP - IN THE RED - $15

Some people didn't know what to make of Cheap Time's self-titled debut album when it was released in 2008. It was a huge leap from their first 7-inch of the year before, and it didn't really sound like anything else going at that time. Too glamtastic and bubblegum for the garage purists and too raw for indie rockers. Cheap Time's new album, entitled Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations), proves that they are capable of still further artistic leaps. Guitarist / songwriter Jeffrey Novak soaks up his influences and spits out new songs with more complex structures and melodies than ever before, while bassist Stephen Braren adds backbone to the songs with his heavily compressed Roy-Wood-style playing, and new drummer Ryan Sweeney tightens up the sound while still keeping things very loose. The Fantastic Explanations sessions have also become something of legend--tracking for the album ended abruptly after engineer Mike McHugh suffered a breakdown and kicked the band out of the studio at gunpoint. Once the tapes were retrieved over a month later, Earle Mankey (ex-Sparks member and producer of the Quick's Mondo Deco and The Runaways' Queens of Noise) was brought in to mix the final album, which turned out to be a perfect match! Anyone who saw Cheap Time on tour last year opening for Yo La Tengo will be pleased with the way these new songs have turned out on record. DEATH - "SPIRITUAL MENTAL PHYSICAL" LP - DRAG CITY - $16.50

Spiritual-Mental-Physical is a collection of wild early DEATH demos, presenting the three young HACKNEY brothers consolidating their powers as they embark on a trip into pure rock and roll music. For many years following the emergence of punk rock, nothing changed. Punk bands either signed contracts and played the rock band game or they lived in a world parallel to the world of commercial rock and roll. Farther along came “the year that punk broke,” a puzzling decade and a half after the whole thing had first been absorbed into the mainstream in the last of the 1970s. And so it was. The books were written; the pronouncements made. Then came news of Death. They’d self-released a single in 1976; the tracks made it onto an unheard punk compilation a couple decades later. In 2008, an obsessive young man tracked them down and found that the surviving two brothers had master tapes from all those years ago. These made up the truly senses-shattering album…For The Whole World To See. Suddenly, the book was open again and the history of punk rock needed to be rewritten to include Death. The sounds on …For the Whole World To See are those of young men, scorching their influences in the process of becoming new.

Spiritual-Mental-Physical gives us Death by transistor radio, with a tinnyyet- furious sound representing the 1970s environment of Death. Here, the musical landscape that inspired them is more clearly defined as they demo material that didn’t make it to the studio, but shares the same ferocious bent as “Politicians In My Eyes,” “Keep On Knocking,” and the rest of ...For the Whole World To See. Spiritual-Mental-Physical is an inside look at Death’s early days, one that fans of the group and fans of punk rock (and, indeed, rock of all kinds) are sure to enjoy for the rest of time.

STRIKE - "RADIO SONGS" 7" - SING SING - $6.50

Strike were a four-piece powerpop band from Belfast consisting of Mark Nixon (v), Noel Rafferty (gtr), Paul Kenny (gtr), Laurence Sprott (b) and Davy Johnston (d). Their sole release was 'Radio Songs' b/w "Teenage Rebel", an amazing 45 issued by the "Shock Rock" label in 1980 an edition of only 500 copies. Shock Rock was setup up by Outlet, a traditional / folk recording studio and label to cash in on punk in Belfast in 1980 but both tracks are well crafted pop songs and its unfortunate that the band didn't go on to more releases. (A later version of Strike featuring a female singer did have a couple tracks on a Shock Rock compilation aptly titled 'Belfast')

THE BLITZZ - "SO FREE" - SING SING - $6.50

All members of the Blitzz could frequently be seen playing at jam sessions in the 70s Amstedam rock-scene before they decided to join forces. When Mick Ronson (David Bowie's Spiders from Mars) heard them play at a venue in the Amsterdam Red Light District he immediately fell for the compact sound of the band. This memorable evening led to the recording of 'So Free' in a London recording studio soon afterwards.

The first single from The Blitzz was released by EMI in the UK and on the Continent in September 1978. 'So Free' went up the charts in several European countries in the months to follow. In December of the same year their second single 'Go Now' was recorded at the renowned Pebble Beach Studio in Brighton and released in the beginning of 1979. After three years of successful touring the band decided to split up to pursue personal goals.

G.G. Allin's debut album is a raging, disturbingly sincere testament to all out, off the rails rock and roll fun at anyone's expense; he puts on a virtual clinic demonstrating his big fat wild streak. Allin is backed by a competent band playing Stooges-style riffs, and he himself is often quite tuneful; this is enough to make the songs some of his best musical material. This is an absolute punk rock classic. A must! Limited Euro import...

Amazingly enough, the violent hatred, sexual and psychological degradation, and staggering stupidity only hint at the heights (or depths) Allin would reach later.

GG ALLIN - "YOU HATE ME AND I HATE YOU" LP - FANCLUB - $17

For better and worse, GG Allin was a legend. Until he finally bit the big one on June 29, 1993, this self-immolating jockstrap-clad mace-spraying dung-flinging aberration survived his own berserk reputation (not to mention his recklessly self-destructive instincts) to become the worst nightmare the Dead Boys and Iggy never had. Allin was a relentlessly obnoxious, coarse and lewd extremist who could send even the most generous-minded liberal over the edge. His catalogue is a juggernaut of puerile mania, demented concupiscence and Hustler-level humor. This album is a fine example of such claims. Includes his absolute best material from 1980-85. BIRTHDAY PARTY - "JUNKYARD" LP - FANCLUB - $17

The Party's second and final full studio album, also the final release with the five-person lineup, was perhaps its scuzzy masterpiece, its art/psych/blues/punk fusion taken to at times outrageous heights. Right from its start, nobody held back on anything, Cave's now-demonic vocals in full roar while the rest of the players revamped rhythm & blues and funk into a blood-soaked cabaret exorcism. Nearly every tune is a Party classic one way or another, from the opening slow, sexy grind of "She's Hit," Cave's freaked tale of death and destruction matched by clattering percussion and a perversely crisp guitar from Howard, to the ending title track's crawl toward a last gruesome ending.

It'll be gone pretty quickly as I only obtained a small grip from the label.

The story goes that X-Aspirations, one of the most important and underrated albums of the punk era in Australia, was recorded in a mere five hours. The scoop, published almost 30 years later on the eve of its reissue, was that it actually took just four. "It was a Saturday afternoon at Trafalgar Studio in Sydney," said Debbie Nankervis, who was married to producer Lobby Loyde at the time, in a recent interview. "The band belted out 13 fantastic songs, one after another." Then they all went out to Manly to see Rose Tattoo and fuck themselves up on weed and beer.

One of the best punk albums ever recorded, hands down.

This RIP OFF RECORDS Compilation LP should put an end to some of that hunting because for the first time in years punk and powerpop fans can easily locate and afford their favorite tracks by CRAMP, CLIVE CULBERTSON, LENNY & THE LAWBREAKERS, NO SWEAT, PRETTY BOY FLOYD & THE GEMS and THE ZIPPS. But that's not all! We tracked down George Doherty and got a few unreleased tracks from THE FADERS, MINOR CLASSICS and TINOPENERS!

DEAD KENNEDYS - "IN GOD WE TRUST" LP - ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES - EX+/EX+ $10

Here's an early pressing of this without a barcode and it's in great shape! The band didn't hold back at all when it came to the follow-up for Fresh Fruit -- if anything, they exploded to a degree never matched by them in later years. Arguably the sheer speed and lack of any subtlety throughout most of this eight-song EP means there's less to talk about in terms of deathless songs and more in the way of sheer breathless anger and rage. The titles say it all: "Nazi Punks Fuck Off," "Religious Vomit," "Hyperactive Child." The sheer hilarity of the band isn't lost, thankfully; "Moral Majority" may rip along as per always, but Biafra's parody of a typical TV preacher at the start is a scream. The real winners come at the end, starting with "We've Got a Bigger Problem Now." A reworking of "California Über Alles," specifically targeted at California governor turned president Ronald Reagan, benefits from an amusing jazz/lounge start and even more righteous, slow-burn bile than before. The group tops it off with a romp through Frankie Laine's "Rawhide," ending everything on a fun, kicking note.

ROBERT POLLARD - "MOSES ON A SNAIL" LP - GBV INC - $15

Has any artist had a run like Robert Pollard since he struck out on his own with the launch of GBV Inc. in 2008? With the release of Moses on a Snail, Pollard has put out an unbelievable twelve albums in a span of roughly two years--and that's not even including all the various EPs, singles and a (third) box set of outtakes and unreleased tracks.

Moses on a Snail contains a dozen amazingly strong Pollard compositions. Even for the ridiculously prolific songwriter, this was a notable writing session as ten of the twelve songs were written in one sitting. As Pollard describes the process, he started with a notebook of working song titles, and penned 22 songs in a single afternoon's creative burst. He discarded over half, and ten songs were picked to later revise and flesh out. He made demos to send to frequent producer / collaborator Todd Tobias, who recorded the instruments before Pollard did his final vocals.

This batch of songs finds a somber, more reflective, yet ultimately triumphant Pollard on such instant classics as "Arrows and Balloons," "Each Is Good in His Own House," "It's a Pleasure Being You" and the enormous title track, which culminates in a dramatic (and atypical) minute-long guitar lead to close the album. Elsewhere, the elegiac "Teardrop Paintballs" delivers seriously heartbreaking melodies, and the (dare we call it) mellow "The Weekly Crow" reminds us to mention that there will be a Pollard composition on the forthcoming Glen Campbell album.

Clocking in at a concise 36 minutes, Moses on a Snail begs to be played over and over again as it reveals itself more with each listen. It's an album that prompts the question: "What is Robert Pollard going to do next to top this one?"

DILLINGER FOUR - "THE BOOTLEG" 12" - FANCLUB - $15

This one-sided 12" features four songs recorded live on the BBC from Twin Cities melodic punks Dillinger Four and comes in a heavy, tip-on sleeve. A very nice fan-created item that will be gone before you know it. Get it now or get it on eBay for twice as much in the future.

PRIMITIVE CALCULATORS / SLUG GUTS SPLIT 7" - SWEET ROT - $7

Sweet Rot is thrilled to present a split 7” by legendary Australian noise merchants PRIMITIVE CALCULATORS and Brisbane, Australia’s swamp gang SLUG GUTS. This record features three previously unreleased versions of the Primitive Calculators quasi single/hit "Ugly Pumping Muscle." You get a devastating version recorded by Primitive Calculators in 1979 in the practice room of the band’s home in Fitzroy, Melbourne. As well as this, they contribute an equally fierce and driving live version recorded in 2009 following their memorable reunion at All Tomorrow’s Parties in Melbourne. Not to be outdone, Slug Guts (2nd LP coming soon on Sacred Bones) darkly interpret ‘Ugly Pumping Muscle’ and give it their own unique twist. For fans of Screamers, Suicide, DFA, etc.

DEADLY SNAKES - "ODE TO JOY" LP - IN THE RED - $12 (OUT OF PRINT)

Ode To Joy is The Deadly Snakes' third album and it's their finest moment to date, even hotter than their first two albums. It refines their attack with galloping rhythms, weeping turns to gospel, and the horn section leans into New Orleans funk. These guys have got a Memphis soul-gone-punk rock sound nnnnnnailed. Not bad for a bunch of white guys in their early '20s from Canada.

MARKED MEN - "ON" B/W "THE OTHER SIDE" 7" - 540 RECORDS - $5

The Marked Men are simply one of the best modern punk bands right now and this is a great example of their prowess. This is a two-song single from Texas group and continues in their melodic power-pop sound that's comparable to The Exploding Hearts, The Replacements or the Buzzcocks. This features cover art provided by Tim Kerr of The Big Boys.

BIRTHDAY PARTY - "PRAYERS ON FIRE" LP - FANCLUB - $17

It should come as no surprise that there is an album in Nick Cave's oeuvre called Prayers on Fire; a fascination with the dark, (self-)destructive side of religion is more than evident in his later work with the Bad Seeds. While there might not be any of the explicit Biblical imagery on Prayers on Fire that Cave would later ejaculate, the title of the album is apt, and its aptness is revealed almost immediately. Over the tribal thud of floor toms, shards of trebly guitar, the throb of an organ, and even a creepily out-of-place trumpet come the possessed, chant-like vocals -- not an incantation to any god, but to "Zoo-Music Girl." It's the religion of depraved sexuality, bestial urges, and sadomasochism. "We spend our lives in a box full of dirt/I murder her dress till it hurts/I murder her dress and she loves it," howls Cave, echoing Leonard Cohen and finally concluding with the berserk plea, "Oh! God! Please let me die beneath her fists." Meanwhile, Cave sounds like he's actually being assaulted by the music, emitting horrific gasps and primitive grunts. And this is only the first track.

CRIME "SAN FRANCISCO'S STILL DOOMED" LP - SWAMI - $12.50

An expanded reissue of the legendary San Francisco's Doomed album from legendary 1970s police-uniform-clad punk rockers CRIME. Includes all the tracks from the original album, along with two unreleased bonus tracks (alternate takes of "Hot Wire My Heart" and "You're So Repulsive"), unpublished photos, updated liner notes, and better mastering.

PURE HELL - "NOISE ADDICTION" LP - WELFARE - $11

In 1974, on the streets of Philadelphia, a band unlike any other was formed. They called themselves Pretty Poison. The band consisted of Stinker (Kenny Gordon) on vocals, Chip Wreck (Preston Morris III) on guitar, Lenny Steel (Kerry Boles) on bass, and Spider (Michael Sanders) on drums. They had a sound so ahead of its time that the music industry was not yet ready for it. They coupled the punk sound of the New York bands of the time with a harder, faster heavy metal edge unheard before. Their unique sound was a result of Gordon's berserk choreography and Morris's needling guitar riffs, while Steel and Spider added a synchronized barrage with no nonsense execution to the arsenal.

Inspired by the famous fuel-altered dragster, they changed their name to Pure Hell in 1975. Soon after, they moved to New York City where they played with bands like the New York Dolls, Sid Vicious, Wayne County and the Electric Chairs, The Dead Boys, The Stimulators, Richard Hell, The Germs, The Nuns, The Cramps and more. In 1978 Pure Hell headlined a tour of the UK, with bands like The UK Subs, Wilko Johnson, Vermilion & the Aces and more opening for them. While in the UK, their only original record was released. It was a single released by their manager Curtis Knight on his label, Golden Sphinx Records. The songs on the single were “These Boots Were Made for Walking” and “No Rules.” The single charted in the top 40 charts in the UK. During the same year, a full length album was recorded but was never released. It did not surface again for 26 years…

NEON CHRIST - "PARENTAL SUPERVISION" 7" - FANCLUB - $7

A faithful, semi-official reissue of this highly collectible and much raved-over 1984 Georgia hardcore 7" release; wild, raging, noisy and ultrafast. Very limited pressing, of course. Get it now if you want it because this is the kind of thing that'll be long gone before you know it...

EXPLODING HEARTS - "SHATTERED" LP - DIRTNAP - $14

In a story that most of the punk rock world knows all too well, on 07/20/2003 the world lost 3/4ths of THE EXPLODING HEARTS (ADAM COX, JEREMY GAGE and MATT FITZGERALD) in a tragic van wreck outside Eugene, Oregon. During its short existence the band left behind a rather brief legacy. In remembrance of one of their favorite bands of all time, Dirtnap has released Shattered, a sixteen-track CD compiling all the band’s singles, demos, alternate takes from the Guitar Romantic sessions, and unreleased material. Meant as a tribute to the band and their music, the CD includes a 20-page full-color booklet filled with unseen photos from the personal archive of band photographer Chrystaei Branchaw, incredible, extensive, liner notes from Fred "The Barber" Landeen of Vinyl Warning Records fame.

GOVERNMENT ISSUE - "BOYCOTT STABB COMPLETE SESSION" LP - DISCHORD - $14

“In November of 1982, I went into the studio with GOVERNMENT ISSUE to record what was to be their first full-length album. Up until that time, they had only released the Legless Bull 7-inch EP, and the tape they recorded early 1982 would take over a year and a half to be released as the Make An Effort 7-inch EP. The members of G.I. excelled at driving each other crazy and there was a lot of arguing, but still we had a great session at Inner Ear and we managed to track 20 songs in one day. From the beginning the band had been divided on what to record, and it was only after much debate that they decided to leave off the material they had recorded with the earlier line-ups and only put out 10 new songs. In early 1983 Dischord was strapped for cash, meaning that we could only work on one release at a time. Since all of our money was tied up with the manufacturing of Minor Threat’s Out of Step 12-inch EP, the G.I. record would have to wait. A new DC label, Fountain of Youth expressed an interest in releasing Boycott Stabb, so it was decided to do a ‘split-label’ record. In this case, Fountain of Youth put up the money and we let them use the Dischord Records name to help with context and distribution. It has since been reissued on a number of different labels and formats, but after coming across the master tapes and hearing the songs that had been left off, we thought it would be cool to release the complete session, and to fi nally release the record on Dischord proper. In going through the tapes, I discovered that most of the outtake songs were never mixed, so earlier this year I took the recordings back into the studio. Hearing the separated tracks amazed me. Such great playing and songs! With the technological advances in the recording world making multi-tracking and overdubbing so common, it’s easy to forget that studios could also be used as something more akin to a photo-booth, capturing what was happening at that very moment. Most of the early Dischord sessions were essentially ‘live’ recordings, so the bands had to be able to play, and because the budgets were minuscule, they had to get the songs down in short order. SONIC YOUTH - "DAYDREAM NATION" 4 LP DELUXE BOX SET W/ 16 PAGE BOOKLET - GOOFIN - $32

Daydream Nation was Sonic Youth’s sixth album, their first double LP, and their last for an indie label before signing with Geffen. Widely considered to be their watershed moment, Daydream Nation catapulted them into the mainstream and proved that indie bands could enjoy wide commercial success without compromising their artistic vision. The original 1988 album has been remastered under the band’s supervision. The bonus platters begin with previously unreleased live performances from the Daydream Nation Tour. Culled from performances at CBGB in New York, The Paradiso in Amsterdam, and several other primo venues, “Live Daydream” includes live versions of every song on the original album. Added to that are four studio bonuses: “Within You, Without You” (a Beatles cover from the NME-sponsored charity Beatles tribute album Sgt. SPITS - "S/T FOURTH ALBUM" LP - IN THE RED - $13.50

In The Red is proud to announce the vinyl (re)issue of The Spits' latest (and fourth) self-titled full-length LP. Originally released by the band late last year on their own Thriftstore Records, the album carries on in the psychedelic skate-punk band's grand tradition of anarchy, chaos, stupidity and destruction--all delivered with an artisan's skill that proves these guys are the real deal. This is the precursor to the brand new Spits album, currently in the works, that will be out on In The Red later this year.

The Spits show no sign of slowing down with their latest effort, mixing equal parts Devo and Misfits into an aurally addictive, synth-inflected stew. Describing the music they play as "punk for the people," these prophets of the proletariat have a message for the masses: The Spits are the soundtrack to the apocalypse.

The band has never shied away from esoteric subject matter. Previous records have contained themes of escaped Nazi war criminals, nuclear winters, commie spies and terrorist attacks, coupled with back alley booze-fests, brain-bruising bong rips, skateboards and fisticuffs. With songs about constable evasion ("Police"), Huxley-esque visions of metropolitan horror ("Eyesore City") and alien abduction ("Alienize"), The Spits' fourth should prove to be just as desperately disparate and sonically sordid as previous salvos. It's their strongest to date, showcasing a band that is only beginning to approach the zenith of its power, as the world dips entropically past its own, toward obliteration. MANIPULATION - S/T 7" - FASHIONABLE IDIOTS - $5

Manipulation is a hardcore band from Chicago with members of Chronic Seizure, Pedestrians, and Civic Progress according to the label website. What's inside is furious hardcore that's doing everything right; I've played this record at least ten times every day since I've gotten it. Includes three songs from their demo and two new (I guess) ones as well. I only hope that ripping on my awful equipment does it justice. Someone claimed this was going to be some of the best material of 2010, and I can see why it might have been. Check this out, and if you like it, buy a copy.

Someone told me this is quite limited. Does anyone have pressing information on this?

Very well done fanclub release. This is a great double LP on blue vinyl and features incredible sound with a fantastic sleeve. The first three sides of this double set are 29 tracks from The Ramones are recorded live in Indianapolis 6/012/1978.Side four features six songs by the Undertones recorded when they played on the Rockpalast television show recorded in Grugahalle, Essen, Germany, 10/17/1982. THE EFFIGIES: OZ, CHICAGO, IL. 4.10.81. SOUNDBOARD RECORDING

The Effigies were one of the first punk groups to spring up in Chicago, around late 1980. While this claim seems somewhat implausible considering Chicago’s rich musical tradition, it makes sense when you consider that blues, generic bar rock, and even disco dominated most clubs in the city. The open-mindedness of clubs like the Oz (where the “Busted At Oz” compilation was recorded, obviously) and O’Banion’s helped give the first generation fringe acts a chance at honing their chops in public.

Any disciple of 1980s American hardcore knows that the Effigies released a slew of incredible records; practically everything recorded from 1981-83 is faultless and are generally considered to be classics of the genre. They haven’t been as posthumous celebrated by the critics as their local brethren Naked Raygun or Big Black (perhaps because they weren’t as sonically pioneering), but the Effigies have survived amongst those interested in American hardcore that wish for the much appreciated basic aggression of the genre melded with the artistic finesse of UK post punk bands like Killing Joke, the Ruts, and the Stranglers.

Lyrically, it’s obvious to me that the Effigies were intelligent enough to basically withdraw from writing about the emblematic yet already cliché political themes sweeping the hardcore underground. They even caught some heat from a few known fanzines for refusing to carry the usual banners like the other then contemporary bands with names comprised of seemingly endless permutations of words such as: “state”, “control”, “youth”, “faction”, or “army”. Instead the group focused on well placed ambiguous themes (well, at least to your average 18 year old skinhead) that their songs have become known for.

Here’s an outstanding Effigies soundboard tape that I received not long ago from a longtime tape trader. This performance is one that is certainly enjoyable to listen to; the songs are delivered with a rough edged execution while totally hitting the target with clever melodic achievement. I especially dig the slapdash guitar solo in “Quota” and the incensed pace of “Strongbox”, two of their all time classic tracks. The quality of this recording is quite good; it’s a low generation soundboard recording that’s really documents what these dudes could do live. I was thinking about performing a slight EQ to give this tape a little more treble but I decided to keep it as is because this is how it sounded the night it was recorded: mighty, thick, fierce, and wholly uncompromising.

I’m uncertain if this is the entire set from this night due to it’s somewhat short length of 18 minutes. Then again, it seems that some of the between song silences have been removed so I suppose it’s possible this is the complete gig. If anyone has a different version of this gig, I’d love to obtain it.

Malefice isn’t quite as metallic as Void’s lost Potion of Bad Dreams, but they’re drinking from the same well. They’re a bit speedier, and the vocals are a little more unhinged, but the guitar work is also a little less flashy and more tame. You won’t find the lost Void record by picking up the Malefice 7″, but if you’re a fan of the 80’s pscyho-core style, you should dig this. If I had to pinpoint this I’d say take some Void, some UM, and a bit of Venom or maybe 7″ era Obsessed and you’re pretty close to what this sounds like. Blue vinyl.

I’d be wiling to bet my bottom Quaalude that the emblematic naissance of the Los Angeles punk scene originated from Richard Meltzer’s arrival from New York sometime in early 1976. After reading his anti-intellectualist prose in ‘72’s Gulcher, it’s obvious to me that he was bound to actualize himself as the thinking man’s Peter Laughner. This type of lowbrow deconstruction was also ostensible when Meltzer was hired as the master of ceremonies for the final Sex Pistols gig at the Winterland during the start of ’78. Based on an earlier altercation, the show’s promoter barred him from the club. In an act of mythic proportions, Meltzer purportedly turned his leather jacket inside out, slinked past Graham and let loose an inundation of profanities onstage. This brand of treachery toward the farty old dinosaurs was utilized more like a weapon in the seminally brilliant punk group Vom.

The funniest thing about Vom (short for “vomit” of course) was that they were profoundly unfunny on a level that kitsch had not progressed (regressed?) to in Hollywood yet. This self-described “beat combo” formed quickly upon Meltzer’s arrival in Los Angeles. They quickly started terrorizing audiences with their gratuitously stupid sounds and iniquitous stage exploits: their initial sets consisted of launching assorted cow parts from the stage in the direction of the helpless audience.

Vom also consisted of Gregg Turner on vocals, along with Meltzer, “Metal” Mike Saunders (under the stage name of "Ted Klusewski") on drums (both would go on to form the Angry Samoans, the next logical progression both musically and ideologically after a stint in Vom), Dave Guzman on “tuneless rhythm guitar”, Phil Koehn on lead guitar, and Lisa Brenneis on bass. They’d go on to issue the “Live At Surf City” EP on White Noise during the summer of ’78. This offering included such go-nowhere epics like “I’m In Love With Your Mom”, “Too Animalistic” (later retouched by the Samoans), “Punkmobile”, “God Save the Whales” and the record’s best track: “Electrocute Your Cock”.

The latter began with a Ramones-esque drum beat and showcased the lyrics: “Electrocute your cock, electrocute your cock / Looking for a hand job? Stick it in a clock”. This is unbelievably strange considering that Saunders was the first to coin the term “heavy metal” (in a review for Humble Pie’s “As Safe As Yesterday Is” in a 1970 issue of Rolling Stone) and has a graduate degree along with Meltzer being considered one the premier rock writers of our generation and the fact that he had a graduate degree from a stint at Yale.

Let me get to the point: here’s a wonderfully slapdash set from Vom recorded live on stage at the Mabuhay in San Francisco on April 24, 1978. I received this recording many years ago from an old school San Francisco punk tape trader who claimed it was a low generation copy straight from the soundboard master. This gem of an artifact includes tracks not recorded for the “Live At Surf City” EP.

Here's the first distro update in some time. I've been very busy with getting out all of the YOUNG REPUBLICANS wholesale orders. Thanks for your patience dealing with the lack of a distro update for the last six week or so. A great deal of stock was wiped out over the holidays and I'm trying to restock that stuff as well as getting some new records in. One special thing about this update is that it includes some doubles of records that I'm looking to unload. There's some nice copies of some great rare records up for grabs. YOUNG REPUBLICANS - "SABOTAGE YOUR COOKOUT" 7" - MORE THAN A WITNESS PRODUCT - $5

Finally found after going missing for nearly 25 years (and doubted by some to even exist), the Young Republicans demo cassette is certainly one of the most elusive and infamous artifacts in the history of hardcore and is truly a special item. This hardcore holy grail was recorded in ’83 and only given to a handful of close friends before the band split and ¾ of the band would go on to form the initial lineup of the influential New York hardcore group YOUTH OF TODAY. This 9 song EP captures the absolute essence of spirited hardcore under the shroud of Reagan: snot-nosed teens going faster MPH while standing in opposition to teachers, parents, rednecks, & suburbia. Highly catchy & classic sounding, this could easily be considered the absolutely crucial missing NYHC or CT hardcore 7” EP from 1983.

This demo features 3 tracks that would soon be re-recorded for the debut YOUTH OF TODAY 7” and another track that would become “Straightedge Revenge” on the Project X 7” on Schism. Comes in a high-quality thick, 14 pt glued sleeve with an old style dip cut top & a 2-sided insert containing lyrics & photos. Includes free digital download card.

The incredibly rare follow up to the debut GISM album, "Destestation". Here it is, the infamous 'MAN" LP. This is a 100% original copy of this scarce release. The vinyl is nearly flawless. The outer PVC sleeve has a small tear (about an inch) on one of the seams. It really isn't a big deal whatsoever but it's worth mentioning if you're considering dropping $250 on a record like this. There is no other problems with the sleeve. There is little to no shelf wear. A very clean copy of this record that you barely ever see.

Here's a nice early pressing of MDC's classic debut album. Clearly one of the best hardcore punk ever released. The jacket does not feature a bar code so I'd venture to say this is a second pressing of this. The vinyl shows minor, superficial hairline scratches that will not effect play. The jacket shows very minimal wear. This is a record that every hardcore collections needs to have.

From the opening declaration of "Flame Still Burns" onward, We're Not in This Alone stands as Youth of Today's most accessible document of positive force. The album's speedy kinetic energy and affirmative content indicate a large 7 Seconds influence. Youth of Today, though, give their compositions the New York City treatment, meaning there are mosh-ready breakdowns and an overall heaviness not present in earlier posi-punk predecessors. And though their musical prowess is noteworthy, We're Not in This Alone's most enduring legacy is the song "No More," Ray Cappo's anti-selfishness, anti-meat manifesto. This song provided a platform for the vegetarian movement in hardcore, confirming Youth of Today's suspicions that their music could serve as a vehicle for change.

A reissue of Australian snot punks THE YOUNG IDENTITIES’ Positive Thinking EP. Originally released in 1979 on Savage Music, in an edition of 300 copies. Members of the band also appeared in JUST URBAIN, BODYSNATCHERS, KICKS, SECTION URBANE and THE PINEAPPLES FROM THE DAWN OF TIME. “The band quickly congealed like a pimple. Being far too young to get gigs at the local pubs and clubs run by quasi mafia figures and stoner hippies, they perform their raucous routine for their peers at parties and practice rooms. It’s soon decided that if this much fun is so cheap and easy, why not make a record! To make this unlikely dream possible The Young Identities (along with fellow reprobates Just Urbain and The Bodysnatchers) form Savage Music, their own haphazard independent label and book the cheapest recording studios in town.

For around $300, all three bands slam down the tunes that would feature on the first 3 Savage Music releases. The Young Identities limited edition 45 boasts 3 tracks and a hand printed cover. It hits the shops in early 1979 but hardly anyone in sleepy old Brisbane really cared much for what a bunch of spotty brats from the backwaters had to say and sales of the record reflected this apathy. Today, after over 30 years, the first Young Identities EP is a much sort after collectors item and has become associated with what is lovingly described as ‘Snot Rock’. Loud, unruly and without pretense. The ages of the band members at the time range from 13 to 17. They were too young to vote and too naïve to care. But they sure could make a wild teenage racket!”

BODYSNATCHERS - S/T 7" - 540 RECORDS - $5.50

A reissue of the self-titled debut 7-inch from Australia’s BODYSNATCHERS, originally released in 1979 by Savage Music. Recorded the same day and in the same studio as YOUNG IDENTITIES. “Formed in early 1978 and lead by Rod McLeod on guitar, drum machine and vocals (with his brother Gavin McLeod on bass and school friend John Hunter on drums) the band were a short lived studio based outfit. Rod and Gavin were card carrying members of two other local punk outfits The Young Identities and Just Urbain. When the opportunity arose for a cheap and nasty recording session, the 3 piece decided to fill in the last remaining time slot by cramming in 2 short sharp songs that didn’t quite fit in with the sounds arising from the rest of the Brisbane music scene.

Drawing on the likes of the Gang of Four, A side ‘Frantic’ was a re-write of a Just Urbain song while its flipside ‘Mystery’ is a sped up/hacked up cover of the Velvets ‘Venus in Furs’. The record has a jarring sound with the vocals more whispered than yelped, while the vintage drum machine drone adds an additional spectral quality. Above and beyond that, it still has the trademark bass heavy, non production values much loved by the rest of the Savage Music family. Released as a 300 limited edition with photo copied cover in 1979, its sound stands as the odd, stumbling step-kid of the label and the band was never to be seen or heard of again. Frantic mystery indeed!”

FINALLY REISSUED ON VINYL!!! The debut full length album from BORIS. Heavier than time. Limited edition pressing on 180-gram vinyl packaged in beautiful gatefold sleeve.

Recorded in 1996, this album was Boris' full-length debut, and it showed right away that this band wasn't messing around.

In its original version, it consisted of one 65-minute track of oozing, slow motion, Melvins-inspired drone rock. (The U.S. release, put out in 2001 by Southern Lord, adds an additional bonus track, the 7:50 "Dronevil." And talk about buildups, this thing starts with a full 25 minutes of heavily down-tuned bass rumblings and doom-instilling guitar feedback before the drums and vocals finally kick in with the big payoff. From there, the band moves through about 15 minutes of thick, fuzzed-out trance rock (again, mostly instrumental) before the drums exit again, leaving in their wake a howling, droning mass of layered guitar feedback. The sound of this is truly massive and unsettling. It takes a good 25 more minutes for the wreckage to clear and the track to finally wind down to a close -- it seems strange to say it, but anything less would have seemed like an abrupt halt, such is the magnitude of this track. The aptly titled "Dronevil"'s oscillating, distorted sub-bass drones are also menacing and impressive, although arguably a bit anticlimactic in this context. In any case, suffice it to say that this album is not for novices, but for anyone whose record collection includes Sleep's Jerusalem, Earth 2, Naked City's Leng Tch'e, and/or more than a couple of the Melvins' earlier LPs, this Mt. Everest of droning doom is probably a necessary addition.

MORE THAN A WITNESS WELCOMES UNITED MUTATION TO THE FAMILY

The first few months of 2011 will be an ecstatic time to be doing More Than a Witness. I’m thrilled to announce that I will be doing an official reissue for the classic Washington DC hardcore group, United Mutation.

United Mutation were the ultimate demented outsiders of DC hardcore. When you consider the crop of other first wave DC (well, okay, Northern Virginia) hardcore acts who’ve made a name for themselves, only the mighty Void matched United Mutation when it came to playing sheer acid-thrash and freak out, face-melting ‘core. Perhaps the greatest thing about United Mutation is that they sounded truthfully damaged and isolated in the increasingly melodic and straight edged DC hardcore scene. This stuff was revolting, fuzzed-out noise pollution for true punks, the uniquely damaged, and those still turning on, tuning in, and dropping out well into the 1980s.

This is music that was so uniquely ahead of the curve when it came to truly unhinged hardcore punk of the 1980s. Michael Brown’s idiosyncratic vocal style was unquestionably the most deranged in hardcore (or any other style of music for that matter) up until that point. The lyrical themes (thankfully) didn’t manifest themselves in sloganeering or championing vacant leftist political causes like most forgettable bands of the era. Instead the band allowed a vision of their sick, introverted worldview with such a painfully unique and imaginative representation.

This LP (MTAWP 003, my third release) will feature the classic debut 7” EP “Fugitive Family” (originally issued in 1983 as a split release between DSI/Dischord), as well as essential demo recordings, compilation tracks, and unreleased recordings. I’m working closely with the band to assemble the best track list possible. This release will be totally different than and superior to the “Freaks Out” LP that released on European label Bitzcore in the late 80s.

Check back for updates on this release. I’d imagine this will be ready to drop around late February or early March. And of course, this release will be done right: the tracks will be remastered from the original masters, it’ll have an excellent gatefold jacket (I’d imagine with some kind of odd feature that will put me into further credit card debt for at least a little while) packed with liner notes, photos, flyers, and other relevant ephemera.
