The importance of “Noise the Show” cannot be overstated. It was perhaps the second regional hardcore punk radio show to exist, considering that Maximum Rock n Roll Radio was up and running in 1979 on KPFA in Berkeley, CA. Also, many of the bands that were played by Sommer did not even have a record out when their sounds were broadcasted. For example, tracks from the Beastie Boys demo were played 6 months before their “Pollywog Stew” EP was released in July of 1982.
This episode starts off with some standard UK punk fodder (Anti Pasti, Blitzkreig, UK Subs) and improves with tracks by the Damned, Menace, and the Business. Hairs raise on the back of my neck when Sommer plays the then brand new Battalion of Saints track, “Don’t Believe” by Kraut (which wasn’t even out yet officially) and announces a gigs for Kraut, Heart Attack, the Betrayed, and the Stimulators.
PLEASE NOTE:
Sadly, when I received these tapes, they did not include any information regarding when they were originally aired. Because I will be posting several more episodes of “Noise the Show” on this site, I will refer to them in the chronological order that I post them. Thus, this is known as tape one.

Thanks for uploading this!!! Good show!!! Now get to work on all those Adventure Jukebox shows...
ReplyDeleteJust had to buy the Menace "GLC" single on eBay!
ReplyDeleteAll of the Menace 45s are essential to own. I have all of them!
ReplyDeleteHey...thanks for posting these Noise the Show's. If you're on Facebook, we have a Noise the Show group started by myself, and even NTS host Tim Sommer is a member. Just search "Noise the Show - WNYU 89.1FM" on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteHope to see you there...
Ha! Growing up in New York during that time, we listened to Noise religiously. Unfortunately it was hard to get in the boroughs and oddly enough WFMU in New Jersey had a stronger signal and a decent hardcore radio show that we listened to (I think their show was a few years later though).
ReplyDeleteThanks for this!
I had almost every show on cassette, including the famous braodcast releasing the Misfits single "Halloween", with the band in studio. (Last post -I think is was WFDU, wasn't it? FDU had a show same week, I think) Most were lost in luggage af JFK. Huge loss. Sommer had a great show here; the whole station was way-before it's time during this era, and many of us were fortunate enough to have tuned in every day/evening. I'll admit it was a huge part of my childhood/high school years. Sommer often played Motorhead, and once "Lookout" off Cheap Trick's live Budakon album followed by an Oi band (can't remember if it was Red Alert, or whom) How genuine is that?! I have the tape somewhere... one of the few that survived. As Sommer used to often exclaim - "And I'm not kiddin'!"
ReplyDeleteYou are my new bestest friend for posting this. Noise the Show was a very important part of my Hardcore introduction. I remember listening to the show on the first tape you posted because it was the first time I heard GLC. Thank you for the memories. I am looking forward to hearing more.
ReplyDeleteYou are my new bestest friend for posting this. I listened to both in my car on the way to work and I was transported to a time when Noise The Show was the most important half hour of my week. Thanks for the memories.Only problem is now I need more.
ReplyDeleteCheck out this NTS tribute at the beginning of this video clip:

I think this show is from 1982.
ReplyDeleteHe mentions "brand new ep ... batallion of saints", which was released in 1982 ermmm right?
The BTS is btw the first US track he plays. Funny with all the over mytholigizing of us hc today on the web that a lot of the roots are really in the UK, also if you read the old interviews with US hc staples like fi Negative Approach etc. Time for a resurgence no? :)
ReplyDeleteI have a tape of "the worlds fastest radio show" (noise the show: songs 30 seconds and under) it contains an announcement for a minor threat/beasie boys/bad brains show. it was billed as (what tim understood at the time to be) bad brains "last show"...
ReplyDeleteHey there Anonymous - I would love to get a copy of that from you. Please contact me at 9thbeastie@beastiemania.com
ReplyDeleteI think that is interesting that Tim Sommer thought that the show would be the last Bad Brains gig. I am guessing the show in question is the Last Show at Max's Kansas City http://www.beastiemania.com/gigog/show.php?g=19811211
