LIFE AFTER DEATH: WYNU-FM RADIO, 1982. HOSTED BY HAL JANNEN. TAPE #1.

Greg Fasolino provided all of these cassettes from his collection. He originally recorded these radio shows as they were first broadcast on WNYU-FM. Without Greg hanging onto these cassettes for nearly 30 years, these broadcasts would perhaps be lost forever. More Than a Witness salutes you, Greg.
“Life After Death” was a weekly hardcore punk radio show hosted by Hal Jannen. “Life After Death” was the successor to Tim Sommer’s excellent “Noise The Show” on WNYU-FM. Jannen’s radio show was originally known as “Hal The Show” as a nod to Sommer’s show. It was renamed to “Life After Death” via an on-air contest.
This posts represents 2 different original broadcasts. The exact date of either original broadcast is unknown but the cassette says they’re both from 1982. Both broadcasts are incomplete because not every song was recorded. Either the original taper didn’t include every track because he already had the records of the songs being broadcasted or he simply didn’t care to include the tracks omitted due to taste.
These 2 broadcasts are worthy of note because they feature demo tracks from Heart Attack and Die Kreuzen. There is also a brief appearance from Dave of Reagan Youth and Adam of the Young and the Useless plugging a show they were playing that night at the Mudd Club.

I have great news for those who want to hear more episodes of "Noise The Show". A follower of this blog has contacted me and wants to donate his tapes so that they can be archived here. He taped a majority of the shows when they originally aired and had the foresight to chronicle each tape with the original air date. This is a great improvement over the episodes that I currently have because they have little to no information on when they were originally aired.

BAD BRAINS: CBGB, NEW YORK, NY 12.25.81 SOUNDBOARD RECORDING.

Now that hardcore is at the ripe age of approximately 30 years old, it’s effortless to conclude that the Bad Brains were the leading pioneers of the entire genre. This is quite ironic considering the fact that group objected that the term “hardcore” be used to describe the characteristics of their music. Critics of the band often cite them as being homophobic based on 1982 interviews in both Flipside (#31) and Forced Exposure (#2) where singer HR refers to shooting homosexuals. And then there’s the well-documented incident in Texas during the same year that involved members of the Big Boys and MDC that had homosexual leanings. These incidents of folly would permanently damage the reputation of any other band that was less talented and innovative than the Bad Brains. If anything this stands as an extraordinary testament to their greatness: stating unambiguously dodgy ideologies to a politically correct audience and still being respected by them.
This post will be the first of numerous entries devoted to the documentation of live Bad Brains material. This Christmas ’81 gig is not the preeminent Bad Brains live bootleg in circulation but it’s nothing to scoff at either. (In my opinion, if you’re a fan of the Bad Brains almost any soundboard live recording before 1987 or so is worth owing). Maybe this recording isn’t the most flawless soundboard recording by these guys in circulation, but you get thirteen and a half minutes of music that will melt your face. HR's custom introduction to "Supertouch" is awe-inspiring enough to induce goose bumps before the song even begins!
I've seen this recording listed on various trade lists as being 20 minutes in length. If anyone has the 20 minute version (or the full show for that matter), please contact me through the site.

NOISE THE SHOW WYNU RADIO TAPE #2 (BROADCASTED ON 4.21.82).

Today’s post consists of the second installment of “Noise the Show” from my tape collection. As previously noted, when I received the original stash of these old episodes they featured no information regarding broadcast dates. Your guess is as good as mine regarding the exact dates. Regardless, based on the overt chronology of when these records were released, one can deduce that this specific broadcast didn’t happen before late ’82 or perhaps very early ’83. Because of the lack of any date information, I will refer to this cassette as tape two because it’s the second one that I received.
This episode features tracks by Blitzkrieg, Bad Religion, Lama, Discharge, Uk Subs, Puncture, Adrenaline OD, Attila the Stockbroker, Misguided, Circle Jerks, the Notsensibles, and the Lurkers.
Maybe you’ll foam at the mouth in excitement when DJ Tim Sommer mentions the free tickets to the Scream/Heart Attack show at the Peppermint Lounge just like I did…

CAUSE FOR ALARM: THE MALL, WASHINGTON DC, 7.3.84 AUDIENCE RECORDING

Cause For Alarm had its origins in New Jersey under the name of Hinckley Fan Club. After moving to New York in early 1983, the band changed their name to Cause For Alarm and quickly became stalwarts in the burgeoning NYHC scene. After releasing a exemplary debut record, the band dissolved due to differing opinions on the concept of Krishna consciousness. They original lineup had their last efforts included on the landmark PEACE double album on R Radical records. A few other songs from this session were also recorded but were never released. These tracks will be the subject of a subsequent post on this blog.
This audience recording captured on July 3, 1984 was a show on the "Rock Against Reagan" tour, as DRI and MDC were also on the bill. The recording is above average considering the technological limitations of the day and is certainly worth a download. Singer Keith Burkhardt is charismatic as he and the band tear through songs from their classic debut EP.

NOISE THE SHOW WYNU-FM RADIO TAPE #1 198?

The importance of “Noise the Show” cannot be overstated. It was perhaps the second regional hardcore punk radio show to exist, considering that Maximum Rock n Roll Radio was up and running in 1979 on KPFA in Berkeley, CA. Also, many of the bands that were played by Sommer did not even have a record out when their sounds were broadcasted. For example, tracks from the Beastie Boys demo were played 6 months before their “Pollywog Stew” EP was released in July of 1982.
This episode starts off with some standard UK punk fodder (Anti Pasti, Blitzkreig, UK Subs) and improves with tracks by the Damned, Menace, and the Business. Hairs raise on the back of my neck when Sommer plays the then brand new Battalion of Saints track, “Don’t Believe” by Kraut (which wasn’t even out yet officially) and announces a gigs for Kraut, Heart Attack, the Betrayed, and the Stimulators.
PLEASE NOTE:
Sadly, when I received these tapes, they did not include any information regarding when they were originally aired. Because I will be posting several more episodes of “Noise the Show” on this site, I will refer to them in the chronological order that I post them. Thus, this is known as tape one.
